OpenAI’s new Apps SDK introduced a fresh ecosystem inside ChatGPT, and Tripadvisor was selected as one of the first partners. This gave us the opportunity to bring our hotel-booking tools to users in a completely new way.
However, designing in a brand-new ecosystem meant facing half-baked patterns, shifting guidelines, aggressive deadlines, and many stakeholders—all moving at the same time.
As the only designer on the project, I drove alignment by staying open, constantly absorbing and testing new ideas, sharing recommendations, and design the new product with our core value. This approach unified PMs, engineers, data scientists, and partner teams around a clear direction and enabled us to deliver a clean, scalable booking experience inside ChatGPT.
After learning how to successfully translate TA components into the new Apps SDK, the next phase is to work with our Design System team to establish a TA-based SDK design system. This foundation will empower other business units to design consistent, uniquely Tripadvisor experiences inside ChatGPT.
